If youve been unhappy with therapy
Sometimes therapy can feel like its not working. This may be due to any number of factors, including the natural impatience we feel when were looking forward to something we want or need, needing time for new ideas and approaches to develop and make sense, and countless other reasons worth exploring.
One very important factor in getting the most benefit out of therapy is the fit between you and your therapist. Its well worth whatever time and effort it may take to find someone who will be effective for you. If you want a great experience, keep looking until youve found someone you can trust and wholl work well with you.
Finding a good therapist may take a lot of work or it might be a simple process.
However it goes for you youll get far more out of your investment if youve found a good match.
Some things you might consider regarding who will work best for you:
- Are there times when you feel like youre in the wrong?
- Have you been confronted in a manner that leaves you feeling criticized?
- Do you feel pressured?
- Do you feel like you have to justify yourself?
- Do you feel listened to and understood, or does it seem like your therapist doesnt get you
- Do you know your therapist is supportive of you and has your best interests in mind?
Its every therapists responsibility to act in the best interests of his or her clients. If youre seeing someone and arent comfortable with what he or she does or says, the first thing you might consider doing is letting your therapist know how you feel. Any good therapist will respectfully honor your feedback, and be pleased to have the opportunity to work through a problem thats getting in the way of what you need.
If you find that youre not getting what you need from a therapist, there is absolutely nothing wrong with telling him or her whats happening (or not happening) for you. If you dont feel satisfied with the response you get, I hope youll feel completely free to look for a better fit.
