The tip of the iceberg
Only a small portion of an iceberg can be seen above the water. If we didnt know theres a lot more under the water, we might believe that the small part we see is all there is.
So
why am I talking about icebergs? Because they hint at the nature of our own experience. The beliefs and feelings were aware of are just the proverbial tip of the iceberg. Whats out of sight isnt at all out of mind. Were just sometimes not aware of it.
By discovering and changing unproductive (or even counter-productive) beliefs and coping mechanisms, we can adopt better ways of handling ourselves. The more we understand the things that challenge us, and how we respond to them, the better able we are do what we need to get what we want. Understanding our problems and challenges more clearly is a key that opens doors to new possibilities and outcomes. There is often far more going on with a problem or concern than we may realize.
Here are some tip of the iceberg examples:
We fight over the stupidest things.
Couples argue about things that matter. What matters, however, may not be immediately obvious. Click here for more information >>>
I have no idea where THAT came from It just popped out before I knew what I was saying.
Its pretty well recognized in the field of psychology that people sometimes say things they dont intend to. The things we say are often influenced by something important but unacknowledged. Click here for more information >>>
Youre not the person I fell in love with!
Falling in love can feel so profound and captivating, so mystical, that it transports us into a different world where colors are brighter, where we feel magically connected, where we feel truly known and understood for perhaps the first time in our lives. Click here for more information >>>
