“We fight over the stupidest things.”

Couples argue about things that matter. What matters, however, may not be immediately obvious. A couple might fight over a sock being left on the bedroom floor. In retrospect, it might seem like the fight was over something “stupid.” In actuality, though, the fight was likely to have been over the meaning put to the sock being left on the floor.

There’s often more happening in a disagreement than what’s immediately obvious. That sock being left on the floor might represent being taken for granted; it might represent not being listened to; it might represent any number of things that, once recognized, can be addressed and hopefully resolved. The fight, then, would have been about something actually important, not “stupid.”
